Harvesting Sugarcane
Harvesting Sugarcane in the Florida Everglades. The Johnson's and Nessman's spent a day touring a lettuce and sugarcane farm. The Sugarcane burn was hot and intense. Do you know where your lettuce comes from? A mountain of sugar twice the size of our largest farm shed!! #holdontoyoursunburn

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Great content Zach. Keep 'em coming and your channel will grow. I also watch Rice Farming TV. I don't farm, but I source my pork, beef, eggs, and dairy direct from local farms. There are a lot of people out there who want to know where their food comes from. Most of us are aware at some level that if you don't farm, we don't eat. Thank you and blessings for keeping food on my table!

If only they'd been using some austoft harvesters, could have had the entire field done while he was there. Now those are a machine, mate was telling me when the first sugar cane harvester was released back in the 60s by the local engineering company, the industry just took off and engulfed the area.

I live in Florida and a lot of people hate the sugar producers. As you can see between chemicals added to the fields and the burning they are terrible polluters. Phosphates leach into the water and canals causing a lot of algae growth, not good for the Everglades. The U.S. can buy sugar cheaper than to grow it, but do to politics and other b.s. ,sugar thugs are subsidized by the government. I don't know if you can get good Cuban food in Belle Glade but glad you enjoyed it.

AWESOME stuff Being a Queenslander from a sugar cane area it is good to see other processes. Our vegetable growers are having a lot of trouble getting labour because of covid . Most of our labour comes from transient overseas pickers and they arent here because of border closures. But we get by. I have spent many hours watching your channel and your home farming stuff.

Seems bad for the environment burning off the sugar cane excess stuff compared to sugar beet , they took Sugar beet from Ireland to grow the cane in Africa

My family ran a sugar cane farm for years, and we did cutting on contract for Huletts as well. We did it far more labour intensive than these guys though. More than half our cane was cut and bundled by hand, which was then taken to a central loading zone where the trucks got loaded. The burning was always nerve racking. Lot of "What ifs". 9 times out of 10 it works out just fine. Still.

Great video, Its to bad you did not get a chance to visit Lake Okeechobee and see the devastation the Sugarcane and the Sod field industries are having on the lake. The lake is so polluted and the mercury levels are so high that there are warnings not to eat any fish from the lake.Once a year the lake produces this green slime algae that comes from nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer runoffs from the sugarcane and sod farm fields. This green slim travels to the Stuart, Florida on the east coast and Ft. Myers, Florida on the west coast and its devastating to all aquatic life, humans, damages boat hulls, just totally screws up the whole ecosystem. This green algae cyanobacteria produce toxins that in humans can cause gastrointestinal problems or liver damage. They just keep growing the sugarcane and sod with no cares about the future of the lake.

Growing up in Puerto Rico besides sugar cane fields fifty years ago, I saw the whole process done by hand by macheteros (machete wielders) and ox-drawn carts. The cut cane was taken to the refinery in railroad wagons and most ended used in the making of rum. My mom hated the burnout days because the ash landed on her laundry. Lots of good memories. Thanks, guys.

I knew sugar production caused a lot of toxic fertilizer and pesticide/herbicide runoff, and the product produces lots of disease in humans, like diabetes and its complications, but I forgot it gives us lots of air pollution too! Loved the video though! Thanks!

it's technically possible. not sure if it is profitable. removing the sugar/cane juice from the cane first is probably the best way to go. still not sure if you'd make money though.
